France to Italy Part 1

We arrived in the Italian Riviera town of Santa Margherita Ligure after leaving Nice. Our goal was to visit Portofino but through Barry’s thorough research, he learned that the best way to get to Portofino is by ferry. So we stayed in the lovely town next door. Unfortunately the day we were to head out to Portofino, the weather was pretty gray that morning and the ferry ride was a bit rough. It is a nice 5 km hike back to S. Margherita and since the weather was clearing in the afternoon, we decided to do the hike back.

Guess which one is the ferry? We came in on the one on the right. The one on the left was a private yacht registered in the Cayman Islands. It had a security person guarding the red carpeted ramp and a group of men in suits and sunglasses were having a meeting. The small boat front and center is more our speed.

The place we stayed in Santa Margherita Ligure was in a great location on the waterfront. Pictures below are from our private terrace overlooking the bay.
